Is Creatine Good For Cyclists?

Creatine can be useful for cyclists whose training includes repeated short, high-intensity efforts. Think sprint repetitions, not simply more miles. Research in cyclists has found improvements in sprint power after prolonged riding, making the demands of your sessions more useful than the distance on your route when deciding whether to include it. Read the cycling study.

Black Amber Creatine gives you unflavoured creatine monohydrate in a straightforward daily powder. Here is where that routine fits cycling, and what the research actually measured.

The Sprint After The Long Ride

In a double-blind crossover study, elite cyclists completed two and a half hours of standardised riding, followed by exercise to exhaustion and five ten-second sprints. After five days of creatine loading, their peak and average sprint power were higher than with placebo across the sprint repetitions. Endurance time itself did not improve. Original research in the International Journal of Sports Medicine.

That is an important distinction for a rider. Maintaining a steady pace and producing another hard acceleration are different tasks. This finding concerns the latter: repeated bursts after considerable riding, rather than a promise that every ride becomes faster.

The researchers used 25g monohydrate daily during loading. That was their experimental protocol, not Black Amber's serving instruction or a dose you need to copy.

What About The Finish Of A Longer Event?

A later study tested well-trained cyclists over a 120km time trial containing sprint sections. Following a creatine-loading and maintenance protocol, power in the final four-kilometre sprint improved compared with the riders' baseline tests. Overall time-trial times did not differ significantly between intervention groups. Read the time-trial research.

This supports a focused question: are you trying to improve the repeated high-intensity part of your training, rather than expecting a supplement to transform endurance? Keep the answer attached to the effort you actually practise. These studies tested research protocols, not Black Amber's finished product.

Match Creatine To Your Cycling Week

Start with the sessions that matter to you:

  • Repeated sprint sessions: compare power across the repetitions and use consistent recovery periods when tracking progress.
  • Strength work alongside riding: consider your whole training week, including the short, high-intensity efforts off the bike.
  • Long steady rides: keep your usual food and fluid plan. Creatine is not carbohydrate fuel for the miles ahead.

Creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high-intensity exercise, with the beneficial effect obtained from 3g creatine daily. This is the established benefit for adults performing high-intensity exercise; it is not a blanket endurance claim. GB nutrition and health claims register.

For riders watching watts per kilogram, track body mass alongside power. Creatine can increase body water and scale weight, so judge the combination against your riding priorities. Our creatine weight-gain guide explains that distinction.

A Daily Serving Without Another Flavoured Drink

Black Amber's labelled serving is one 3.4g scoop of creatine monohydrate, providing 3g creatine, mixed into water or your preferred drink once daily. The 250g tub provides 73 servings. Its unflavoured, single-ingredient format lets you keep the drink you already enjoy. See the product panel.

Choose one reliable point in your day rather than adding another serving to every bottle on a long ride. For a practical timing routine, read when to take creatine.

Your Cycling Questions

Do I need to take creatine during the ride?

No. Keep to the product's once-daily serving. The cycling research does not establish that repeated doses during a ride improve the result.

Should I test it for the first time on race day?

Use a normal training block to establish your routine and monitor how it fits your sessions. Race day is not the place to experiment with several changes at once.

Can I use it alongside electrolytes?

They have different jobs. Keep your creatine serving fixed and plan fluid and electrolyte intake around your ride. Our creatine and electrolytes guide covers combining them without multiplying servings.
